KIDAL, MALI—The Africa Corps, a Russian-controlled paramilitary group, has executed a tactical withdrawal from the northern Malian city of Kidal following a period of heavy combat. The retreat signals a significant development in the volatile security landscape of the Sahel region.

The decision to pull troops out of Kidal came in the wake of coordinated and sustained assaults by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a prominent Tuareg-led faction. The FLA, which is reportedly aligned with an affiliate of the al-Qaeda network, launched attacks on multiple strategic locations across Mali, pressuring the Africa Corps and Malian military positions.

Coordinated Retreat and Ongoing Operations

The withdrawal was described as a joint decision made in concert with Malian authorities. Sources confirm that the evacuation prioritized the safe removal of wounded soldiers and essential heavy equipment, underscoring the severity of the recent engagements.

While Africa Corps forces have ceded control of Kidal, the group maintains that its operations in Mali are far from over. A statement released by the paramilitary force emphasized that its troops remain operational in other parts of the country.

The security situation in Mali, the statement acknowledged, “remains difficult,” highlighting the persistent threat posed by various armed groups, including the al-Qaeda-linked FLA coalition. The loss of Kidal, a historically significant city in northern Mali, represents a setback for the Russian-backed forces and the transitional government in their efforts to stabilize the region.
