TAN-TAN, Morocco — Nearly 5,000 troops from Morocco, the United States, and approximately forty allied nations are currently engaged in the 22nd edition of the massive joint military exercise, “African Lion 2026,” at Cap Draa, near Tan-Tan. The maneuvers, featuring tank fire, helicopter operations, and bomber flights, are focused on modernizing warfighting capabilities to address the escalating threats emanating from the Sahel region.

A Historic Partnership Adapts to Modern Warfare

This year’s exercise holds particular significance, highlighting the enduring alliance between the U.S. and Morocco. “This coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States. Morocco was the first country to recognize us 249 years ago,” stated a senior military official. “We’ve been doing African Lion together for 22 years and now, as we see the changing character of war, we’re adapting that and bringing new technologies and integrating that into our force to meet the future.”

AFRICOM (U.S. Africa Command) reports that a key focus of the 2026 drills is the integration of cutting-edge technology, specifically artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and next-generation digital systems, into military operations. This technological pivot aims to enhance the combined forces’ effectiveness against non-state actors and complex security challenges across North and West Africa.

Held annually, African Lion remains the largest U.S. military exercise on the continent, consistently drawing major foreign contingents for comprehensive land, air, and naval training components. The goal is to bolster interoperability and readiness among participating nations to ensure stability in a strategically vital region.
