President John Dramani Mahama is spearheading a two-pronged strategy to significantly enhance healthcare service delivery and reduce treatment delays in the capital, Accra. The initiative focuses on the strategic repurposing of existing emergency infrastructure and the expedited completion of a major hospital reconstruction project.

Repurposing the Burma Camp Emergency Centre

The President announced plans to transform the former COVID-era emergency centre located at Burma Camp into a permanent facility dedicated to handling general emergency cases. This move is aimed at creating an additional high-capacity emergency outlet, which is expected to immediately ease the burden on existing hospital emergency rooms and dramatically cut down on treatment delays for critical cases.

Update on La General Hospital Reconstruction

During an inspection tour of the La General Hospital reconstruction site in Accra, President Mahama expressed strong confidence in the project’s timeline. He stated that the reconstructed facility is anticipated to be completed and ready for commissioning by November 2027.

The completion of the La General Hospital is a critical element of the government’s healthcare expansion plan in the capital. Once operational, the hospital is projected to serve a population exceeding 50,000 residents in La and its adjacent communities, providing a substantial boost to regional healthcare capacity.

Focus on Preventive Healthcare

The President also took the opportunity to highlight the government’s intensified commitment to preventive care, referencing the recently launched Free Primary Healthcare initiative. This emphasis suggests a broader policy alignment where infrastructural improvements are paired with preventative measures to create a more resilient and efficient national health system.

The combined efforts—repurposing the Burma Camp facility for immediate emergency relief and completing the long-term, high-capacity La General Hospital—signal a concerted push by the administration to address long-standing issues of access and delay in urban healthcare settings.
