Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o has forcefully denied fresh financial wrongdoing allegations, dismissing claims that he misappropriated over €560,000 as a coordinated effort to silence him.

The controversy centers on payments made by Russian authorities following an international friendly match against Cameroon in October 2023. According to a report by The Times, the funds were remitted directly into Eto’o’s personal bank account rather than the official accounts of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), which he has headed since December 2021.

Former federation officials allege that no internal accounting or banking records exist to verify whether the money was subsequently transferred to FECAFOOT. Consequently, whistleblowers referred the matter to FIFA’s Ethics Committee over a year ago. While complainants claim they have received no update, FIFA maintains that its judicial bodies operate independently and free from political influence. FECAFOOT has yet to issue an official institutional statement.

Responding via a statement published on his social media channels, Eto’o rejected the accusations, framing them as calculated retaliation for his outspoken advocacy on behalf of African football governance.

“These recurring attacks are part of a targeted campaign,” Eto’o asserted, accusing critics and sympathetic media outlets of recycling unverified narratives whenever he challenges established football hierarchies.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan star reaffirmed his commitment to reform, stating that African administrators must be permitted to lead autonomously and defend their continent’s interests without intimidation.
