Nigeria’s National Assembly has issued a sweeping ban on all official visits and online engagements with South Africa, citing a failure to address escalating anti-immigrant violence.
The legislative body stated it could no longer overlook the persistent attacks on Nigerian citizens, who have reportedly been killed, injured, or forced to abandon their livelihoods amid the unrest.
For months, South Africa has been plagued by deadly anti-foreigner demonstrations, including recent violent clashes in Durban targeting Congolese encampments.
While South Africa remains a primary destination for immigrants seeking opportunities in one of Africa’s most industrialized economies, the nation faces deep-seated challenges, including high unemployment, struggling social services, and significant crime rates.
Analysts observe that these systemic issues are frequently—and unfairly—blamed on the immigrant population, despite long-standing government failures to address the root causes. Nigeria has emerged as a vocal critic, formally accusing South African authorities of failing to adequately protect foreign nationals from the ongoing violence.
