Mali has emerged as an “open-air laboratory” for AI-driven information warfare, with competing conflict factions adopting generative artificial intelligence to amplify propaganda and accelerate political fault lines, according to a new report by the Dakar-based Timbuktu Institute.

As the Sahelian nation continues to navigate a complex security crisis involving jihadist insurgencies, armed separatists, and military forces, digital battlegrounds are rapidly evolving. However, the study highlights that factions are deploying generative AI with varying levels of sophistication, resources, and strategic intent.

At the basic end of the spectrum, Al-Qaeda affiliate Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) maintains a relatively limited AI footprint, primarily utilizing its media wing, Az-Zallaqa, to generate digital promotional posters.

In contrast, networks aligned with the Tuareg separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) demonstrate a more deceptive tactic. Supporters have leveraged platforms like TikTok to deploy AI-generated avatars disguised as real commentators. According to researchers, these synthetic personas humanize the group’s messaging while effectively obscuring the true origins of the campaign.

The most advanced operations, however, are linked to Russian state-backed actors and the Africa Corps paramilitary group assisting Mali’s ruling junta. The report notes that these entities possess the capability to run fully integrated campaigns—combining synthetic commentary, automated articles, and AI-generated imagery distributed across coordinated networks of fake accounts targeting sub-Saharan Africa.
