State television in Iran announced Saturday that the late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, will be laid to rest on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad.
The burial, which was originally planned for March but delayed by the ongoing conflict, marks the culmination of a week of national mourning.
The funeral proceedings are scheduled to begin on July 4 in Tehran, with an additional ceremony in Qom on July 7. Notably, the start of these national observances coincides with the United States’ 250th Independence Day.
Ali Khamenei was assassinated on February 28 in an attack attributed to Israel and the United States. Following his death, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, assumed the role of Supreme Leader in early March. Mojtaba, who sustained injuries during the same attack that killed his father, has remained out of the public eye, managing state affairs through official statements.
